NH Senior Games Results

NH Senior Games was very well run. All brackets were round robin, with the larger brackets having a medal round. Each round robin group was assigned specific courts, so the group could manage their own court time without waiting for assignments after every game. It worked smoothly. But it was hot inside!

Competition was very good, with many out of state players.

You can watch a couple short videos.

Fun competition at Regionals in Portland

Several LPA members competed at the USAPA Atlantic Regional Tournament. It was a lot of fun, even though I only won one game the entire weekend. The only downside was long delays in the schedule, sitting around for an hour or two waiting to be assigned a court to play on.

Memorial Day Mixer

A few LPA members participated in the Memorial Day Pickleball Mixer at Willows, in North Andover, MA. The original intent was to be a North Shore vs. South Shore team tournament, but there weren’t enough South Shore people so it was just red vs. blue. Bob McCarthy, Bob Lemay, and Mark Duckworth were on the blue team, and Gary Wenzel was on the red team. There were a few jokes about people wearing the wrong color shirt, but we could still keep track of who was on which team 🙂

There were two divisions, intermediate and advanced. Each team had 6 men and 6 women in each division, for a total of 48 people altogether. At the start, we selected partners for mixed doubles, mens doubles, and womens doubles. Some people partnered with people they knew, and some partnered with people they just met.

It was a team round robin format, so everybody got to play against each of the six opponent teams in their division in mixed doubles, followed by three more games against each gender specific doubles team. Each game was to 11, win by 1. Total team points mattered, so winning 11 to 3 was better than winning 11 to 9.

After play was over, we all had some very good pizza made right there at Willows. The red team won the event. I don’t remember the overall score, but nobody seemed to care too much because everybody was there to have fun, and we did.

2018 Connecticut Senior Games

Contributed by Beth Atkinson.

Where were you on May 18, 19 and 20th ? If you weren’t at the Connecticut Masters Games at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT then you missed some great pickleball! The Freeman Athletic Center at Weslayan University had 15 courts on the most unique & comfortable court surface I’ve ever played on. Janice Pauley, the tournament director, runs a fabulous tournament. Computer screens set up at the field house provided easy access for people to check out schedules, brackets, pools, and results throughout the weekend. Events started on time (some even started early!) and there was very little waiting because each pool or bracket was given plenty of nets on which to compete.

There were not too many of our local players down there….our contingent included Margaret & Gene Berg (congrats to Gene for winning Silver in Men’s Singles!), Tom Duyette (Singles, Doubles & Mixed Doubles), Patty & Phil Ricciardi (Congrats to Phil on winning Bronze in a very competitive Men’s Doubles field), Kathy Paganis, and myself (Beth Atkinson). Kathy & Tom played out of their MINDS in the crazy, competitive 18 team bracket for mixed doubles and made it all the way to the Bronze Medal match…they were AMAZING! And I’m more than happy to report that Kathy & I had a blast in the 15 team women’s doubles field and were able to come back from a 9 to 1 deficit in the bronze medal game to win 15-13, sharing the podium with 2 of the premier women players in New England (Sherry Sheer and Yvonne Ting).

If you’ve never entered a tournament before, what the HECK are you waiting for?! Registration is still open for the Senior Games in ME, NH, MA and RI. This is a qualifying year for the National Senior Games so medal winners are invited to participate in the 2019 National Senior Games….Albequerque anyone???
